Why You Need a Coaching Certificate
· You will have the knowledge to coach
Very simply, you can only give what you have. By undergoing the processes of obtaining a coaching certificate, you will be able to gather knowledge about coaching with greater depth. Coaching, as you will learn, is more than a methodological process set as a definite.
It is about people – communicating, empowering and journeying with them in a life-changing pathway. Having the knowledge of coaching will enable you to help others more effectively as you understand the principles of a strong coach such as active listening, powerful questioning, having a coaching presence, effective communication and a whole lot more.
As an example: a football coach with no knowledge of football or coaching footballers will be lost at how to coach his team. The plan that is drawn up with no knowledge is not likely to be substantial.
Likewise, being a coach in your workplace equipped with knowledge will be a great advantage for you. What you say and what you do will be backed by the knowledge you have acquired through obtaining a coaching certificate.
· You will have the skill set to apply your coaching knowledge
The next step after obtaining the knowledge of coaching is to practice and apply it where you intend to. An effective coach is a skillful coach in the way he or she listens, asks questions, communicates and inspires the greater potential within individuals.
Furthermore, you will be able to survey, report and measure the outcomes or extent of effectiveness of coaching while you are applying it. Knowledge without skillful application is likely to come up short. As rushing the process may fail to help others understand what you are trying to convey while slowing down the process may frustrate others.
Therefore obtaining a coaching certificate will enable you to skillfully apply your knowledge.
· Your understanding is substantial.
Introducing something new to others may be a hard thing for many different reasons. People at your workplace may be skeptical of coaching and how it’s done. There will be many questions as to why coaching is the ideal method to be gone about with at your workplace.
Having your knowledge and skill set backed by substance will build co-operation and trust with others as you introduce coaching to them. This understanding will also boost your confidence as you are prepared to answer and explain new questions and ideas to them.
· You have credibility.
By holding a coaching certificate, all of what you know, say and do has credibility. The same way a doctor can be trusted more with substantial analysis of sicknesses and diseases once he or she has obtained a doctor’s degree. To put it plainly, credibility enhances belief.
When you are introducing something new, your credibility will take you far as you are able to build trust and respect with those who you are coaching. As mentioned by Mary Verstraete, President of Center for Coaching Excellence and a PCC Coach, “Your certification is additional assurance for your clients to show that you are a trained coach and it shows that you are serious about your profession, and that your clients can expect an excellent experience with you.”
· It shows your commitment.
When you hold a coaching certificate, it shows your commitment to coaching. It shows that you believe in it enough to pursue it whole-heartedly. It shows that you are passionate about it.
In the end, the coaching certification will not be the only example of your drive to share coaching with others, but your life and character will serve as a great and impactful testimony. The founder of Success Motivation Institute, Inc., Paul J. Meyer puts it as, “productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning and focused effort.”
Can we coach without certification?
Anyone can coach. Sometimes we do it even without realizing it. A simple conversation over coffee with a friend may even include elements of coaching as you ask questions to help figure out their problems and solutions to it. You may even be a manager who coaches by nature as you seek possibilities with your team rather than telling them what to do. On one hand, this type of coaching is known as informal coaching. But there is the other – formal coaching, which includes performance reviews, strategic planning, goal setting, coaching assignments and so forth.
To answer the highlighted question above, yes you most definitely can coach without certification but should you?
As discussed in Part One of Why You Need a Coaching Certificate, it has been established that obtaining a coaching certificate will build your coaching knowledge, skill set, substantial understanding, credibility and commitment. When you coach without a certificate, how far will you be able to take your team? When you are equipped, you will be able to coach your team for the long term. When your team catches on, they will then be able to coach others under them effectively in the future.
Although to obtain a coaching certificate will take time, the time invested in understanding coaching will be returned in results when you effectively coach others. A certificate may just as well be a piece of paper, but the process of obtaining the certificate is priceless. It is impossible to put a price on being able to help others discover their true potential. Everyday you will be adding value to someone else’s life. You are enabling them to be the best they can. You are feeding the hope of success. You will be changing the world by empowering people one at a time, and you will be equipped to do so with a coaching certificate.
Having a qualified internal coach at your workplace
Based on the book “Bring Out Their Best” by Mel Leow and Natalie Ashdown, for companies and organizations, there are two ways of having a coach. Either by hiring a qualified external coach or by sending an existing employee to obtain the coaching certificate. Consider the following of having an internal coach at your workplace:
1. They are able to build capability within the organization.
Internal coaches do mean that they have previously spent time working at the company or organization. They have experienced the company’s working environment and have already made connections with colleagues. By knowing the environment and the people, internal coaches do hold an advantage in a familiar environment as compared to external coaches who have to take more time to learn about a new environment.
2. They are able to build a coaching culture and a culture of trust.
Internal coaches, as mentioned above, have existing connection with their colleagues. It may still be a difficult task to introduce, develop and build a coaching culture within the company but it may feel less imposing than having an external coach come in and try to change the existing culture.
3. They are able to coach according to the company’s visions and goals.
Internal coaches would have grasped a better idea of their company’s visions and goals. That way, they are able to coach teams and departments with a clear direction towards said visions and goals. It may be harder for an external coach to understand where the company is heading simply because they have not worked there previously.
4. Coaching programs receive good marketing and are included in leadership development programs and training schedules.
Working on the culture of trust established with the coach and coachees, there would be better marketing for coaching programs, which would lead to its inclusion in leadership development programs and training schedules.
5. It sends a strong message that coaching is valid and worthwhile.
Sending existing employees to obtain the coaching certification shows commitment and belief towards coaching. Therefore, having internal coaches speaks a louder message that coaching is beneficial and worthwhile in your company and organization.
6. No further budget will be spent for external coaches.
There will be no extra cost in hiring external coaches because you will be using existing resources when you have internal coaches.
